Pet safety remains a top priority for every responsible owner. The challenge lies in providing pets with ample freedom while ensuring their protection against wandering or entering hazardous areas. The PetSafe Invisible Fence system offers a balanced solution that combines liberty with security.
The PetSafe system operates through a fence transmitter that sends radio signals to a buried boundary wire. This wire can be installed underground or attached to existing fences, creating an invisible perimeter for pets. During initial training, boundary flags serve as visual markers to help pets understand their limits.
Pets wear a specialized receiver collar with contact points that touch their neck. When approaching the warning zone, the collar emits an alert tone. If the pet continues forward into the correction zone, it delivers a safe static pulse to redirect the animal back to the permitted area. Designed for pets weighing over 8 pounds, this system has been proven safe, comfortable, and effective.
The collar uses replaceable PetSafe RFA-67 batteries, designed for easy installation and enhanced waterproofing. Proper battery alignment is crucial - the arrow symbol on the battery must match the triangular mark on the collar. A test light tool facilitates clockwise rotation until alignment with the locking symbol is achieved.
Static correction levels range from 1 to 5. Level 1 provides only audible warnings, while higher levels deliver progressively stronger static pulses. The system automatically escalates correction levels if a pet remains in the correction zone for extended periods at level 2 or above.
Correct collar placement is essential for optimal performance. The contact points must maintain consistent skin contact beneath the pet's neck. The QuickFit collar design allows for easy adjustment while maintaining proper tension. A well-fitted collar should allow one finger to slide between the contact points and the pet's skin.
For long-haired pets, occasional trimming around the contact area may be necessary. Young pets or those with seasonal coat changes may require periodic collar adjustments to accommodate growth.
The collar includes a dedicated ID tag ring that should be positioned away from the receiver unit. Importantly, never attach a leash directly to the receiver collar, as this may cause excessive pressure on the contact points. Instead, use a separate non-metal collar or harness for leash attachment.
The PetSafe system serves as a training aid rather than a physical barrier. Effectiveness varies by individual pet temperament and training consistency. The manufacturer emphasizes that no containment system can guarantee absolute security for all pets in every situation, particularly for animals that may pose safety risks if they escape.
